The four affectors of posture are mind, trauma, behavior and aging. These affectors all contribute to posture by having a direct or indirect effect on posture. The effect may be positive (+) for example the behavior of exercise is positive, but no exercise is negative (-).
BEHAVIORS
Behaviors are the things we do (or don't do) and may have an effect on health and subsequent posture. The effects of behaviors on posture are quite complex. For example, poor sleep habits may have a negative effect (-) on posture both directly (looking tired and collapsed) and also accelerated aging (reflected in a stooped posture).
Some other behavioral affectors include diet (+|-), moderate sunlight exposure (+), social media use (+|-), over-working (-), drugs of addiction (-), excessive sitting with poor ergonomics (sedentarism) (-), meditation (+), social activity (+|-), receiving massage (+), relaxation (+), connecting with nature (+) and caring for others (+).
TRAUMA
According to the Australian Psychological Society, trauma is defined as:
Very frightening or distressing events may result in psychological harm. This harm is called trauma,
and can affect a person’s ability to cope or function normally.
Trauma has a profound effect on the mind and in some susceptible people result in maladaptive behavior such as chronic stress reaction and subsequent psychological or psychiatric conditions and/or addiction behavior.
THE MIND
Our state of mind is reflected by posture, and this has been referred to as emotional anatomy by Stanley Keleman (centre press Berkley 1985). In this regard, the mind and the way we think and the way we feel has a direct influence on posture. It is obvious a person is sad for example, by the way they hold their body. AGING
It is easy to observe the effect of aging on the posture. As people get older, the aging process often accelerates, and we witness increased risk and tendency for aging related diseases such as cancer, heart disease, neuro-cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, osteoporosis and arthritis. Evidence is now accumulating in the medical sciences that aging should not be considered inevitable but a product of lifestyle factors, environmental impact and nutritional imbalances. When we observe many older people, we see collapsed posture, shuffling gait and slow mental functions.
ADDRESSING THE POSTURE PROBLEM
If posture is a reflection of who we are (Self), then logically to transform our posture we must transform Self. The four affectors of posture are the doorways to that transformation. As stated previously, the mind is problem number 1. Therefore, it is suggested that transformation should begin with the mind. Without and understanding of mind the other three problems are difficult to address.
